Pohon damar or Agathis dammara

In the story 'Origin/descent of the Pesulima Family' Mr. Gijs Pesulima writes that the pohon damar was the symbol of the kingdom of Soya. That's why we have choosen a drawing of this tree as the logo for this website.

The pohon damar is a very large tree of up to 65 meters tall that occurs naturally in the Philippines, Sulawesi and the Moluccas. The crown is conical, branches somewhat pendulous, bark reddish-gray, leaves deep green lasting several years (evergreen) occasionally acuminate and cones globose to 10 cm long.

The resin from the pohon damar, from which lacquer and varnish is made, is known as copal or dammar resin. Local applications are varnish, incense, fuel for lamps and torches, sealing wax and so on. Its wood is known as kauri. It is used for veneer and plywood, sawn timber, furniture, musical instruments and even as artificial limbs.

The English names for the tree are white dammar pine, East Indian kauri, or mountain agathis. In Indonesia: dammar raja, kisi, salo. In Dutch: harsboom. The latin name is Agathis dammara (fam. Araucariaceae).
